We built the tool we couldn't find.
Ascend exists because we spent years delivering projects for enterprise clients and governments — and every single engagement involved the same painful, broken workflow.
The problem we couldn't ignore
For over a decade, we delivered complex software projects across enterprise and government — spanning finance, healthcare, logistics, and public sector. The technical side we could solve. The operational side was a different story.
Every engagement involved the same fragmented stack. Email for client communication. Separate project management software for tasks. A third tool for time tracking. A fourth for invoicing. And between each transition, hours leaked. Context was lost. Invoices were wrong or late.
We tried every combination. We built elaborate integrations. We wrote scripts to sync data between apps. None of it solved the fundamental problem: the tools weren't built to work together.
The frustration was compounded by a hard truth — we knew how to build software. We'd built it for some of the most demanding clients in the country. So we stopped looking for the right tool and started building it.
"We didn't build Ascend to compete with Notion or Harvest or FreshBooks. We built it to replace all three — because no one else was doing that, and we needed it to actually run our practice."
Two people. All of it.
Bruce
Product & Engineering
Fifteen years delivering software for enterprise and government across New Zealand. Bruce designed, architected, and built Ascend — every database schema, every API endpoint, every workflow decision. Before Ascend, this meant managing clients with a different tool for each step of the engagement. That stops being acceptable when you've seen how connected systems actually behave.
June
Client Success & Experience
A decade of client support, project co-ordination, and coaching teams through complex engagements. June shaped what Ascend actually feels like to use — the workflows, the language, the onboarding, and the support experience. She ensures that Ascend works the way practitioners actually think, not the way a software specification imagines they should.
We answer every ticket ourselves.
There is no support team. No offshore helpdesk. No chatbot pretending to be a person. If you email us, you hear from Bruce or June — usually the same day. That's not a marketing line. It's how we've always run our practice.
What we actually believe
Honest pricing forever.
Ascend will never move features out of a plan you signed up for to push you to a higher tier. The free plan is genuinely free. The paid plan is priced for the value it delivers — not for what the market will bear.
Your data is yours.
We don't mine your workspace to train models. We don't sell your behaviour data. We don't lock you into proprietary formats. You can export everything, at any time, without asking permission.
Small is a feature.
Two people making decisions means no committee, no roadmap bureaucracy, no v3.0 rewrite that breaks everything you built on. If something is broken, we fix it. If you need something, we can actually build it.
